Nuka looked away and replied quietly, “I forget that he’s my brother now sometimes.” You nevertell with Scar, after all.

“Please try to understand,” Scar said kindly. “I chose Kovu as my heir not because I favor him over, but rather because the lionesses still loyal to Simba are more likely to follow him.”

Nuka nodded and looked at the quickly darkening sky. A storm was brewing. Lightning flickeredthe sky as the cub asked uncertainly, “Can I go now?”

“Hm? Oh, yes, run along, Nuka.”

The prince fell asleep to the sounds of the pounding rain and had a nightmare-blood and slaughterdeath and exile..........

“Heya, Ta-a-ani,” a scruffy, dark furred lion cub greeted, sauntering up to an equally scruffy female.

The female’s tail lashed. “Nuka, you’re supposed to be watching Kovu-”

“Kovu, Kovu, Kovu,” the darker cub mimicked in a falsetto. He flopped to the ground. “He’s notout of the den yet, what could happen? Besides, everyone’s worshipping him.” He paused andat his sister. “Uh, Vitani? Are you listening....?”

Vitani stretched languidly and reminded Nuka with a growl, “He’s the heir.” Giving him a sly look, added, “Mother’s going to be angry.” “Oh, Mother’s always angry,” Nuka said sulkily.

Rolling her blue eyes, Vitani commented, “No, just when you’re around.”

“All she cares about is that little hairball,” he grumbled.

The two cubs turned their heads at sudden hysterical laughter as three hyenas approached them.only female among them dropped a piece of rotting meat at Vitani’s paws, who backed awaywrinkled her nose in disgust.

“Heh heh, eat up, princess,” one of the males laughed.

Nuka sniffed the decaying flesh cautiously and turned his head away at the stench.

“I’m not eating that,” Vitani growled in a low tone.

“What’s the matter? Not good enough for you?” the same male sneered.

“Shutup, Banzai!” Nuka snarled.

Vitani unsheathed her clawe and swiped at Banzai’s face, causing the female hyena to begin. The lioness cub kicked the meat at her and snapped, "Why don’t you eat it, Shenzi?”

“Hey!” Shenzi bared her teeth and leered, “You just better watch out.”

“You can’t kill me, I’m Scar’s only daughter,” Vitani retorted.

That brought a burst of laughter from Shenzi. “You think he cares about a mangy little thing like? I noticed you’re not the heir, girl.”

“I’m not afraid of you,” Vitani stated. Nuka growled his agreement.

“Get away from them!” a commanding voice suddenly ordered.

All five animals looked up, not sure who the command was meant for.

A rangy, tawny lioness descended from Pride Rock. “What are you dirty fleabags doing near the’s children?” she demanded.

Shenzi, suddenly cowed, stammered submissively, “Er, uh....nothing, Zira....Your Highness......”

“Good.” Zira’s razor sharp teeth glinted as she said, “Now get out of here.”

The hyenas gulped and loped off while Zira stared after them disgustedly. Shortly, though. sheto Nuka and snarled, “What are you doing out here? Didn’t I tell you to watch your?!”

“He’s not my brother!” Nuka said angrily. Vitani cringed.

A calm look came over Zira’s face before she hit Nuka with her paw, knocking him over, and, “As far as we are concerned, Kovu is your brother! And you will treat him as brothers treatother! Or next time I’ll let the hyenas have you!”

Vitani watched her mother pad away with wide eyes before turning to Nuka, who was cowering onground, nursing a cut on his face. The cub whimpered and peered up at her. “Is Mother gone?”asked in a whisper.

“Yes,” Vitani told him quietly. Her dark-furred brother got up slowly. “It’s your own fault, you. You shouldn’t make Mother mad. Especially when it comes to Kovu.” She leaned closer toand whispered, “She’s been having dreams.”

“What can be so bad that she has to take it out on me?” Nuka sulked.

Vitani looked around before answering quietly, “About Simba......”

“Simba’s dead,” Nuka snorted. “I was there.”

“You were barely alive,” Vitani scoffed. “And I heard the hyenas talking.”

Nuka’s eyes widened. “You did? Wha’d they say? Wha’d they say?”

“They didn’t see him die. They left him in the desert.”

“Oh......”

Something caught Vitani’s eyes and she slunk off.

“Tani?” Nuka looked around and noticed a rangy, but powerful, lion with a thick black mane and aover one of his green eyes smiling down at him from an overhang.

“F-F-Father,” Nuka stammered. “I...er....”
